Preparation and characterization of Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic catalyst support

Abstract: In order to prepare the Fe3O4@SiO2 magnetic catalyst support, Fe3O4 was coated by SiO2  by precipitation method with tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS) as silica source.The effects of NH3·H2O concentration,TEOS concentration,and addition of Fe3O4 on the coating ratio of Fe3O4@SiO2  were investigated,and the phase and microstructure of Fe3O4@SiO2  were characterized.Results showed that TEOS could be used to prepare Fe3O4@SiO2.The optimal reaction conditions were NH3·H2O concentration of 0.4 mol/L,TEOS concentration of 0.02 mol/L,and Fe3O4 addition amount of 0.04 g.Under the optimal conditions,the coating ratio of the obtained sample was 99%.The Fe3O4 particles had been incorporated into the SiO2 coating,but the conglomeration was taken place seriously in the preparation process of Fe3O4@SiO2 .
