Abstract:

The surface of fly ash was modified by alkali solution hydrothermal treatment and grafting with silane coupling agent to improve its interfacial compatibility in polymer matrix. The microstructure, composition and surface properties of fly ash were characterized by scanning electron microscope(SEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) and contact angle test. When the concentration of NaOH was increased from 0 mol/L to 4.0 mol/L,fly ash presented petal-like architecture and formed Na6(AlSiO46·4H2O,which led to the increase of specific sur-face area from 12.2 m2/g to 46.4 m2/g,and the reactive sites increased, which was beneficial to graft with silane coupling agent and improve the interfacial compatibility with polymer.

Key words: fly ash, alkaline solution hydrothermal treatment, silane coupling agent, structure and surface property
