Abstract: The difficulty in phosphoric acid purification technology is the purification of metal ion impurities in wet-process phosphoric acid, especially the separation of magnesium ions. The research progress of removing magnesium ions from wet-process phosphoric acid with different methods, such as reverse micelle solvent extraction, ion exchange, liquid membrane separation, chemical precipitation, reverse osmosis, and evaporation, was mainly reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of those methods and limitations thereof in the industrial applications were analyzed and the development direction of magnesium removing technology for wet-process phosphoric acid was proposed. The liquid membrane separation method has been highlighted because of the good selectivity, strong separation effect, high mass transfer efficiency, simple process, and low energy consumption, and the metal cations can be effectively purified in wet-process phosphoric acid when it combined with other methods. Therefore,it has a very broad application prospect in the industry.
