Abstract: Change laws of sodium silicate solutions with different concentrations added by anhydrous alcohols were investigated, which were analyzed by weight loss,FT-IR,and 1H-NMR etc..Experimental results showed that the liquid is stratified with the addition of alcohol;the supernatant liquid is clarified alcohol solution and the bottom is a colloidal solution of sodium silicate with a flowing quality; It is also discovered that the addition of anhydrous alcohol has a critical value in order to form a stable colloidal solution of sodium silicate;the colloidal solution is changed into a stagnant solid precipitate over the critical values.A possible mechanism was proposed to explain the alcohol action on the solution of sodium silicate:alcohol molecules combined water molecules and narrowed the distance between the colloidal particles of sodium silicate, which benefited removing the excess water and thus reduced the drying time and energy consumption in the process.
