Study on preparation of high purity spherical barium carbonate particles

Abstract: High purity barium carbonate powder was prepared by carbonization method with crude barium residue and carbon dioxide as raw materials.Crude barium residue was soaked to obtain barium sulfide liquid saturation.A suitable ammonium fluoride as a precipitating agent was added to remove the strontium and calcium in barium sulfide solution.The effects of reac- tion temperature and the amount of ammonium fluoride on the impurity removal effect were investigated.Carbon dioxide gas was added to the filtration of barium sulfide solution to take the carbonization reaction,the influences of the amount of ammo- nium fluoride on the morphologies and size of BaCO3 crystals were investigated.The obtained crystals were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and X-ray diffraction(XRD).Results revealed that when ammonium fluoride dosage was two times of the theoretical value,the high barium carbonate was obtained after carbonation,reaching a preliminary purpose of barium carbonate purity control.
