Abstract: Series rare earth doped lead titanate ceramics are important piezoelectric and pyroelectric materials, but their surface morphology and particle size have an obvious effect on material performance.A series of lanthanum doped lead titanate (PLT) powders with different lanthanum doping amounts were synthesized by means of hydrothermal method using Pb(CH3COO)2•3H2O and tetrabutyl titanate as raw materials. The phase composition, surface morphology, and particle size of the products were characterized by XRD,SEM,EDS,and LPA techniques. It was observed that only a few content of La3+ substituted Pb2+ and entered the crystal lattices and most of lanthanum existed in the interface of particles in the form of lanthanum hydroxide or was absorbed on the surface of PLT particles. Thus, the crystallization behavior of PLT powders was changed and the particles had a rod-like crystal with preferred orientation.Furthermore, with the increasing doping amount of lanthanum, the particle size decreased firstly and increased afterwards and it reached critical point when doping amount x=0.05.
