Abstract: The main causes of resource utilization problems of red mud，i.e.high alkalinity and high radioactivity，were analyzed.The research status of radioactivity sources and the shielding technology of red mud were mainly discussed.A large number of literature studies have made some gratifying results about red mud in the fields of resource characteristics，enrichment，and removal mechanism of alkali，natural radioactivity，activity，and safety application ways as building materials.Even so，the study on the enrichment mechanism and shielding method of radio-nuclides is still in the starting phase.In order to get rid of the dilemma caused by radioactivity of the red mud to promote the resources utilization in building materials，the solutions to the above problems according to the author’s research were put forward systematically.
