Abstract: Ilmenite mainly contains Ti and Fe elements, about 90% of the world′s total are spent on the production of titanium dioxide.Based on sulfuric acid process for preparing titanium dioxide, the comprehensive utilization of ilmenite resources was summarized, and it was found that three points were worth paying attention to.The first was taking advantage of active intermediates in the production process of titanium dioxide to produce new high-value added TiO2 functional materials, such as mesoporous TiO2 powder. The second was employing ilmenite to obtain high-value added novel materials, such as basic iron titanates, which included Ti and Fe elements simultaneously. The third was using the by-product ferrous sulfate slag to prepare high-value added products, such as LiFePO4.Though these above ways cannot achieve complete comprehensive utilization of ilmenite, some high-value added products may be manufactured, and the increased profits may be used to offset the environment protection expense of titanium dioxide industry.
