Abstract

The improvement of the activation treatment on the activity of high-magnesium nickel slag was investigated by introducing MgO in high-magnesium nickel slag and remelting it with water quenching, and the engineering performance and hydration products of activated high-magnesium nickel slag as cementitious material were studied using water glass as the activator. The results showed that the compressive strength of high-magnesium nickel slag based geopolymer after activation treatment could reach 35.60 MPa,which was 60.7% higher than that of untreated high-magnesium nickel slag-based geopolymer. The factors affecting the compressive strength of geopolymers in order of predominance were water glass dosing,m(high-magnesium nickel slag)∶m(fly ash),and water glass modulus. The main hydration products were sodium-magnesium-aluminum silicate gel(N-M-A-S-H),and a small portion of aluminosilicate and hydrated calcium silicate, etc, without Mg(OH)2.A large number of gelling phases such as N-M-A-S-H wrapped around unreacted FA,etc.to form a dense gel-crystal phase structure. This study provided some guidance for the practical application of high-magnesium nickel slag as raw material for the preparation of geopolymers, and provided a new idea for improving the pozzolanic activity of slag.
