Aerosol-assisted synthesis of spherical magnesium oxide and its adsorption properties

Abstract

Spherical magnesium oxide(MgO) was prepared by aerosol-assisted method using MgCl2·6H2O as the magnesium source and urea as the precipitant.Precursor particles and MgO samples synthesized at different reaction temperatures were studied by means of X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM),infrared spectroscopy(IR) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption.The experimental results indicated that the prepared spherical MgO had a specific surface area of 36 m 2/g,an average pore diameter of 34 nm and a total pore volume of 0.26 cm 3/g.The adsorption of Congo red accorded with pseudo-secondary kinetics and reached adsorption equilibrium within 5 min.The adsorption isotherm conformed to the Langmuir model and the saturated adsorption capacity was 764.91 mg/g.
