Abstract: In allusion to the red mud of sintering process from Zhengzhou Branch of China Great Wall Aluminum Corp.，the resource characteristics and main limiting factors of comprehensive utilization were analyzed through the study of its moisture content，density，pH，particle size distribution，specific surface area，chemical composition，mineral composition，morphology， and radioactivity etc..Results showed that：the moisture content of the red mud was high and it was strongly alkaline；the red mud was made up of large particles that were agglomerated by many irregular small particles，its fineness modulus was 1.5，slightly less than fine sand；substance construction and activity index of it showed that it was suitable for producing building materials，especially for raw material of cement and mixed materials；but  two main factors limiting its comprehensive utilization were excessive alkali content and radionuclide.Thus reducing alkali content and shield its radionuclide was the core questions of comprehensive utilization of the red mud.
