Abstract: Basic magnesium sulfate whiskers were synthesized by hydrothermal method with MgSO4 and Mg(OH)2 as raw materials.Preparation process and characterization method were also studied.Experimental results indicated optimum technological conditions for preparing basic magnesium sulfate whiskers were as follows:concentration of MgSO4 was 1.28 mol/L,amount-of-substance ratio of MgSO4 to Mg(OH)2 was 1~4,the stir intensity is 450 r/min,reaction temperature was 200 ℃,and reaction time was 6 h.Results showed that high purity MgSO4•5Mg(OH)2•2H2O whiskers with smooth surface were obtained under those conditions.Furthermore, the product was delicate, uniform and without bending with about 20~45 μm in length and more than 31 in slenderness ratio.
