Abstract: In single column ion exchange process to produce potassium carbonate, feed liquor was seriously wasted and resin was not enough utilized, which brought lots of problems, such as high production cost, low concentration of by-produced ammonium chloride solution, and difficult recovery. In order to solve above problems, experiments were performed for producing potassium carbonate by the techniques of absorption with three serial ion-exchange columns and elution with two serial ion-exchange columns with potassium chloride and ammonium bicarbonate as raw materials and with strong acid cation exchange resin as medium of ion exchange. Results showed that by using three serial ion-exchange columns process, utilization ratios of resin and raw material, and concentration of ion-exchange liquids were improved.Furthermore, production period can be shortened and productivity can be increased. Therefore, this process can not only be applied in the production of potassium carbonate, but also provide a new idea for the improvement of other ion exchange processes.
