Abstract: A lot of magnesium slag(MS) is produced in the production of metallic magnesium by Pidgeon′s reduction method, and the random dispose of magnesium slag caused serious environmental problems. The physico-chemical properties of magnesium slag have a big effect on its comprehensive utilization. The influences of three treatment methods, such as natural cooling, air cooling, and water quenching on physico-chemical properties of MS after furnacing, were studied by BET,XRF,FTIR,XRD,and SEM. The results indicated that MS was a kind of alkali slag; the different cooling methods can lead to great different in the physico-chemical properties, such as particle distribution, pore distribution, mineral composition, and micro morphology of treated slags; The bigger particle, pore size, and specific surface area, the lower content of γ-C2S and the higher content of β-C2S could be obtained for the higher cooling rate.
